How We Review Building Materials
The evidence and evaluation framework used in West Coast Construction Guide material reviews and comparisons.
Building materials perform as part of an assembly. A useful review therefore looks beyond a product label or isolated specification.
Evidence we consider
We look for installation instructions, evaluation reports, tested assembly information, warranty terms, maintenance requirements, compatible accessories, environmental exposure limits, and documentation relevant to the intended application. We distinguish manufacturer evidence from independent or regulatory sources.
The evaluation framework
Material discussions consider:
- fitness for the stated climate and exposure;
- compatibility with adjacent layers and components;
- installation complexity and the consequences of common errors;
- inspection, repair, and replacement access;
- maintenance burden and expected service conditions;
- availability of qualified installers and replacement materials;
- total installed cost rather than unit price alone.
What a review does not prove
A product that meets a test standard is not automatically suitable for every wall, roof, foundation, or jurisdiction. Published performance also cannot compensate for poor detailing, storage, installation, or maintenance. Readers should verify current documents and project-specific requirements before purchase or installation.
